Types of Sofa Fabric Material
Upholstery fabric is the lining of your sofa, and it's an important part of how well your furniture will hold up over time. Without it, your sofa won't be able to give you the support and comfort you need.
There are several different types of upholstery fabrics, each with its own pros and cons. Knowing what type of fabric is right for your home will make it much easier to find the perfect sofa.
Natural Fibers
Plant-based materials such as cotton and linen are often used in sofas because of their durability, strength and aesthetic appeal. They are usually stain-resistant, wrinkle-resistant and fire-retardant.
Linen is a popular choice because it is soft to the touch, breathable and resists mildew. It's also a good choice for homes with allergies because it can be easily cleaned.
Wool is another popular choice because it's durable, easy to clean and stain and dirt repellant. But it can also feel itchy on the skin, so it's best for areas where there's little direct contact with the fabric.
Polyester and Polypropylene
Synthetic fabrics such as polyester, nylon, acrylic and olefin are also popular for sofas because they add durability and resistance to stains, fading and soiling. These materials are often blended with natural fibers to reduce pilling and crush problems, and improve their ability to absorb odors and repel moisture.
Nylon: Made from a chemical process, nylon is a sturdy and elastic fiber that can stretch into nearly any length. It is sometimes combined with other fibers to reduce pilling and wrinkling and prevent crushing in velvet or chenille fabrics.
Leather
Although leather is an expensive material, it is one of the most durable fabrics available and will last a lifetime. It is naturally stain-resistant, can be gently vacuumed and cleaned regularly with leather conditioner or saddle soap.
Silk
Made from natural fibers produced by the worms that produce silk, silk is very durable and a great option for a luxury sofa. It is also a great choice for homes with young children or pets because it is easy to clean, and does not absorb stains.
Acetate
Made of cellulose extracted from wood, acetate is very similar in feel to silk but is more durable and practical as an upholstery fabric. It is less expensive than pure silk and has a smooth sheen, making it an attractive option for a high-end sofa.
Performance Lining
Developed to mimic the look and feel of linen but with more durability, this material is an incredibly popular choice for couches. It comes in a variety of colors, patterns and textures to suit your decor and style.
Polyester
A synthetic fiber, polyester is a durable, strong fabric that can be dyed to resemble natural fabrics. It is resistant to fading and soiling, but it can pill if it is not made from high quality material.
Microfiber
A densely woven or nonwoven fabric, microfiber is a very popular sofa fabric because it offers a suede-like finish and is noted for its durability and longevity.
