Polyester fabric is one of the versatile and durable fabrics available, with endless uses for apparel and home furnishings. It's a common choice for outdoor clothing such as parkas and windbreakers because it's moisture-resistant, lightweight, and easy to care for.
Choosing the right fabric for your eCommerce business can have a huge impact on how your products look and feel. Taking the time to learn about your fabrics and their properties will ensure that you make informed decisions for your customers.
The two main types of polyester are polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and poly-1, 4-cyclohexylene-dimethylene terephthalate (PCDT). Both are incredibly popular in the textile industry.
Both polyesters are made using different methods and each type is suited for specific applications. For instance, plant-based PET can be biodegradable while PCDT is more durable and elastic than PET.
Making polyester begins by combining ethylene glycol and dimethyl terephthalate to form a monomer that can then be reacted with a variety of chemicals to create a polymer. Both PET and PCDT are recyclable in closed-loop systems, which means that they can be recycled into other products without destroying their inherent properties.
When the polymer is ready, it's melted and shaped into pellets. Pellets can then be forced through tiny holes called spinnerets, where the molten polymer will harden and form long threads. These threads can be drawn on heated rollers to produce yarn or twisted into fibers that will be spun and woven into the material.
The next step is to dry the pellets. The resulting fibers will be stiffer and stronger than in their earlier state. They'll be much thicker and more durable than their initial states and will have an even texture.
After drying, the fibers are spun into filament yarn or staple yarn, depending on what they're intended to be used for. In the case of filament yarn, chemists twist and twist these polyester fibers into a strand-like material that will eventually be woven into a fabric.
Staple yarn is a form of polyester that resembles cotton yarn in that it has a textured surface. Unlike filament yarn, polyester staple yarn is cut too short lengths before being spun into a fabric-like material.
Finally, a form of polyester called tow is formed by drawing together long strands of fibers that are tightly packed. These strands can be twisted or textured to provide a wide range of characteristics.
This form of polyester is used to make pillows, quilts, and outerwear because it has the volume possible. It can also be blended with other fibers to achieve specific properties.
While polyester is a dependable and versatile fabric, it does have some negative impacts on the environment. Oil stains, for example, tend to stick to polyester fabrics and give off unpleasant odors that render the garment unappealing to wear or use.
While removing these odors can be challenging, you can eliminate them by washing the stains with a mild detergent and using a scraper like a flat razor blade to remove excess oil. You can also clean and disinfect the fabric with Arm & Hammer baking soda.
